You may be outdoorsy and love your comfort at the same time. Truthfully, the idea that you have to be tired and in pain when hiking is an outdated myth.

Why should you endure cold, sleepless nights just for the sake of packing a smaller bag, when you can enjoy a good night’s rest and be more ready for new adventures during the day?

So we’ll let you know how to choose the best 2 person sleeping bag for keeping two people warm and rested, as well as show you which products we love the most.

Know Your Criteria

When choosing a sleeping bag, think of the following:

The shape of your sleeping bag is very important because it’s what keeps heat inside. If there’s too much room even after two people have snuggled in together, there’s extra air that will make you lose body heat faster.

Double sleeping bag shape

The typical shapes for a sleeping bag are:

The rectangular shape is better if you value extra room above anything else, while the barrel shape is still capacious enough but warmer.

The mummy shape isn’t that good of a choice for a two-person sleeping bag because the shoulder and hip girths are smaller. So though they may be warmer, they’re not so cozy.

Make sure the outer shell is built from a durable, insulating material, that keeps you warm and cozy. Ripstop polyester or nylon are top choices of the best items.

The materials your sleeping bag is manufactured from are very important, but arguably insulation is the most significant.

Double sleeping bag with Insulation

You can choose between synthetic and down insulation.

  • Affordable.
  • Dries quickly.
  • Durable.
  • Not particularly compressible.
  • Protects when wet.
  • Strong.

  • Compresses better.
  • Doesn’t dry fast.
  • Doesn’t protect when wet.
  • Expensive.
  • More durable
  • Stronger.

Make sure you have easy access in and out of your sleeping bag with the side zippers. It’s a good idea to check the zipper design as well: for example, a zip plow is a great way of preventing tears.

Functionality of a double sleeping bag

Versatility is another important factor, so it’s a good idea for your two people sleeping bag to be unzipped and transformed into two individual bags.

We all love the perks that come with a high-quality product:

  • Bag liner for added warmth, protection from tears and cleanliness.
  • Hood for keeping your head warm.
  • Included pillows so you don’t have to bring your own.
  • Pad sleeve to prevent rolling off.
  • Pillow pocket to add your own pillow.
  • Stash pocket for your things.
  • Storage sack for safe keeping.
  • Stuff sack for convenient transportation.

Two People Sleeping Bags We Love

After taking all that into account, let’s take a peek at some nice sleeping bags:

Big Agnes Dream Island 15 Degree Sleeping Bag

Big Agnes Dream Island 15 Degree Sleeping Bag

Weight: 10 pounds

Dimensions: 136 x 121 x 100 inches (shoulder, hip, foot girths)

Specifications: soft inner liner; rectangular shape; easy compression; fiber filling; internal sleeve; pad sleeve design

Best Use: car camping

Description: This 4.5 stars and $249.95 Big Agnes Dream Island 15 Degree Sleeping Bag is perfect for two people, but you should know that some hikers consider it a bit bulky and rather hefty.

However, that also means you’ll never get cold when sleeping inside this bag, even when the temperatures drop below the freezing level.

Since it’s so big, you can easily fit inside a couple of very thick, insulated mattresses to ensure extra warmth. And the added room is another great perk since its inner liner feels very soft.

The only downside could also be represented by its big size, and the truth is you can’t squeeze in too many things in your backpack apart from this.

That’s why it’s more appropriate for car camping. But since the chances of you getting cold in it are really slim, we’d say it’s worth it. Besides, the bag can be compressed really well, even if it’s filled with fiber.

Moreover, the Dream Island has an internal sleeve, so that its pads stay put. Other less qualitative sleeping bags allow the pads to get out or even split down the middle, which isn’t the epitome of comfort.

Conclusively, this is a top-notch sleeping bag for its convenient price, especially because there are at least two people who can share the weight of their luggage when going on a longer hiking trip.

TETON Sports Mammoth Queen Size Sleeping Bag

TETON Sports Mammoth Queen Size Sleeping Bag

Weight: 16.5 pounds

Dimensions: 28 x 15.75 x 15.75 inches

Specifications: 100% polyester; imported; size 94 x 62 inches; flannel lining; hollow fiber insulation; stuff sack included

Best Use: car camping

Description: This 4.6 stars and $129.99 TETON Sports Mammoth Queen Size Sleeping Bag is another good choice if you’re going car camping since its weight is almost 17 pounds. That also makes it perfect for a longer trip, when you set up camp and don’t move around a lot.

Its big size of 94 x 62 inches renders the bag great not only for two people to use it since even a child or a smaller pet can easily squeeze in between them.

And everyone who wants to get inside can easily do that since this huge sleeping bag has zippers on both its sides. That’s a nice advantage as you don’t have to bother your co-sleeping partner when getting in or out.

Plus, it’s easier to control the overall temperature: if one of you likes it when there’s a bit of cold, they can simply sleep with the zipper opened.

Keep in mind that this is a very warm bag, rated for 0°F, and you might need some air at some point. What makes it so warm is the materials it’s made from. The 100% polyester construction explains its resistance and insulation abilities, as polyester is a strong fabric, that’s resistant to the wind and cold.

The flannel lining is another perk because it keeps the warmth inside, and it feels very soft. The hollow fiber insulation is pretty great for added warmth too, but it’s also good for the loft.

The stitching is doubled to increase this bag’s overall resistance and to make it less likely for you to feel a draft.

Plus, you get some nice baffle cinches around the shoulders, as well as strongly manufactured and secured zippers to make sure you remain warm. And if that’s not enough, there’s an included hood to cover your head with.

Big Agnes King Solomon 15F Double Wide Down Sleeping Bag

Big Agnes King Solomon 15F Double Wide Down Sleeping Bag

Weight: 4.6 pounds

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 11 inches

Specifications: 15°F, integrated pad sleeve; DownTek™ insulation; rectangular design; zippers on both sides; anti-draft design; pillow pockets; mesh sack; carry stuff sack

Best Use: car camping

Description: This 5 stars and $449.95 Big Agnes King Solomon 15F Double Wide Down Sleeping Bag redefines the whole concept of King Solomon’s wisdom, seeing as it’s great for two people to share. It’s a pretty warm bag, as it’s rated for 15°F, so you can confidingly get a good night’s rest at very low temperatures in the outdoors.

The design is very good since the pad sleeve is integrated into its construction, thus preventing you from rolling off it and waking up.

The insulation is made from another good, trademarked fabric, DownTek™. This consists of a thick filling that’s also resistant to water. Instead of absorbing it, it keeps water out and away from you.

Seeing as the design is rectangular, both people can easily fit next to each other without any problems. Considering that the hip and shoulder girths are both 104 inches, while the foot girth is 72 inches, it’s understandable why this is considered one cozy bag.

Both people can easily get inside it by using the zipper that’s on their side, or they can open the zippers if they want to feel some draft.

That’s because if you keep the zippers closed, there’s no chance you’ll feel drafty since the whole construction is anti-draft, beginning with the collars, the center flap, the zipper and the wedge.

Furthermore, this bag has pockets specially manufactured for pillows so you can bring some too. You can also fit some bag liners inside if you want to be more comfortable. But we’re sure you’ll like it, so use the included mesh and carry sacks to store it and transport it safely until your next camping trip.

REI Siesta +35 Double Sleeping Bag

REI Siesta +35 Double Sleeping Bag

Weight: 8.75 pounds

Dimensions: 78 x 132 x 124 inches (foot, shoulder, hip girth)

Specifications: barrel shape; hollow core; nylon shell; polyester fill; taffeta lining; +35°F rating; zippers on all sides; storage sack included

Best Use: camping

Description: This 4.2 stars sleeping bag is another capacious choice considering its big dimensions.

And at 8.75 pounds, it’s not even as heavy as other models we’ve discussed by now, so it can be a perfect choice for camping, keeping you warm at low temperatures above the freezing level, as the temperature rating for this particular item is +35°F.

But since it has a barrel design, both people can easily snuggle inside it keeping each other very warm.

The feeling of warmth comes courtesy of a great craftsmanship from high-quality materials. Take the insulation for instance: this is hollow core, which keeps you protected from the outside low temperatures, as well as from water.

If it gets wet, it will repel the water and continue to protect you from the cold. It’s also a resistant fabric, with a long lifespan and can easily be compressed.

The ripstop nylon from which the shell is made is another great fabric, as it’s resistant to tears and it has a water resistant coating that prevents it from getting wet.

Your comfort is further ensured by the soft lining, made from a material that insulates well: polyester taffeta. Any possible cold spots will be taken care of quite easily thanks to the layered quilt design.

Plus, you can easily get in and out of this sleeping bag from either side or even from the bottom thanks to its zippers. And if you don’t want to share anymore, use the middle zipper to transform it into two sleeping bags, that can be easily stored in the included cotton sack.

Ohuhu Double Sleeping Bag with 2 Pillows

Ohuhu Double Sleeping Bag with 2 Pillows

Weight: 6.1 pounds

Dimensions: 18.9″ x 11.8″ x 11.8″

Specifications: 23°F rating; 210T polyester shell; T/C lining; cotton filling; can be made into 2 sleeping bags; 4 zippers; 2 included pillows; carry sack included

Best Use: camping

Description: This 4.4 stars and $49.99 Ohuhu Double Sleeping Bag with 2 Pillows is manufactured from top-notch materials, that help keep you insulated and comfortable inside it. The shell is made from 210 T polyester, which is a sturdy fabric, that’s responsible for keeping water and cold out.

The T/C lining is another great feature, as it ensures you have a cozy sleep, in a soft bed. And the cotton filling is pretty dense, adding to the insulation capacities of the Ohuhu sleeping bag, but also helping you pack it pretty tight.

The choice regarding how to use this product is entirely up to you. For instance, you can keep the two sleeping bags attached together with the help of the middle zipper, so that a family of two grownups and a kid can easily sleep side by side.

Or you can choose to detach the two so that two people can sleep in their own bag. It’s nice to have this much versatility thanks to the four zippers which also allow you easy access from both sides.

Plus, you have the option of using the two included pillows that come with this product or bring your own. Either way, since both the cover and the bottom have generous dimensions, you can easily fit that and a mattress inside.

You’ll stay warm and protected at temperatures above 23°F, but the comfortable temperature range for which this bag was designed is 32°F to 50°F.

Once your trip is over, you can conveniently store your sleeping bag into the included carry sack. Or you can use this valuable extra for a plus of portability and easy transportation.

Coleman White Water Large Cool-Weather Scoop Sleeping Bag

Coleman White Water Large Cool-Weather Scoop Sleeping Bag

Weight: 7.5 pounds

Dimensions: 10.5 x 10.5 x 20 inches

Specifications: 100% polyester; 100% cotton fill; imported; 30°F-50°F range; zip plow; roll control; zipper glide design; cuff; fiber lock; thermo-lock; 5 year warranty; 71 inches maximum height

Best Use: cool weather camping

Description: This 4.3 stars and $36.25 Coleman White Water Large Cool-Weather Scoop Sleeping Bag is a reliable product, that benefits from the brand’s high reputation.

So although it has a lower price than the other items we’ve presented so far, you can rest assured it does a good job for the money you’re paying.

That’s because it’s manufactured from good, sturdy materials, like the 100% polyester for the outside. Polyester will help keep you warm and protected from wind and water. The filling is 100% cotton, which is another warm and resistant fabric for added insulation.

Other good design features include the comfort cuff, that has a nice and soft feel on your face. The fiber lock has a very important purpose, as it doesn’t let insulation slide.

That increases your comfort, but also protects the sleeping bag, and makes it last longer. The thermal lock is another great feat, ensuring that there’s no danger of losing heat through the zippers.

The zippers are also well designed, with a zip plow that doesn’t let them tear the fabric of your sleeping bag. Besides, their glide design makes them easier to zip even around the corners of your sleeping bag.

Consequently, this sleeping bag is perfect for use at a temperature range of 30°F-50°F. This temperature rating was also certified independently because the Coleman brand wants to assure its customers of the accuracy of its promises. And it further does that by including a warranty for 5 years as a limited-time bonus.

Grizzly by Black Pine 2 Person Sleeping Bag

Grizzly by Black Pine 2 Person Sleeping Bag

Weight: 14.5 pounds

Dimensions: 90 x 65 inches

Specifications: ripstop nylon shell; two-layer design; microfiber insulation; draft tubes; chest baffles; flannel lining; zippers on both sides; -25°F temperature rating

Best Use: cold weather camping

Description: This 4.3 stars and $149.99 Grizzly by Black Pine 2 Person Sleeping Bag is the perfect choice if you’re thinking about a winter camping trip with your significant other.

That’s because two people can comfortably snuggle in next to each other in this capacious bag, that offers an increased protection against the freezing cold.

This can be explained by the fact that the temperature rating is -25°F. Withstanding such low temperatures can easily be achieved thanks to a sturdy construction from grade A materials, specifically chosen to increase the warmth factor.

For instance, the shell is made from ripstop nylon, which is resistant to tears but likewise provides great insulation. The actual insulation is made from microfiber, an amazing fabric for keeping heat inside the bag.

That can additionally be done with the chest baffles and the included draft tubes. Besides, since the design is made from two layers, the seams don’t overlap and that’s an additional way of ensuring warmth.

But comfort is important too, which is why the lining is made from flannel, that feels very soft. Plus, the user experience is completed by the huge double zippers that can be opened from both sides.

So you don’t have to wake your co-sleeping partner when getting in or out of the sleeping bag, nor do you have to waste time struggling with a small zipper.

Plus, the stuff sack is a convenient extra, since it’s resistant and can squeeze your sleeping bag into a small package thanks to its compression straps.

My lovely wife recently concluded that it was not acceptable for us to be sleeping in separate sleeping bags when camping, so made the unanimous decision to purchase a two-person sleeping bag.

After reading countless reviews on Amazon, she eventually settled on the Ohuhu Double Sleeping Bag. I won’t deny, when it arrived, I immediately had concerns. Were we going to be warm enough? Or perhaps, will we be too warm? Will the zippers cause sleeping in such close confines to be uncomfortable? Fortunately, once I took the opportunity to examine the bag, my concern regarding the two of us in one bag was immediately alleviated, as the bag not only works as a 2-person bag but can be broken apart to operate as two single bags.

That very weekend, we took the bag out on our camping trip and suffice to say, my concerns regarding temperature, were also unfounded, though the bags are thin and light, they were surprisingly warm and somehow, the addition of another person’s body heat crammed into the bag, didn’t seem to be a factor.

Overall, for the price, I’ve been nothing but satisfied with the bag, and would certainly recommend it.

    • Dennis Owens

Some couples are swayed by thin material and insulation, but the truth is, most sleeping bags nowadays are compact and well-insulated to keep you warm and comfortable even in cold overnight campings. This is a great feedback with the Ohuhu, Will. Thank you.

Before purchasing the Teton Mammoth sleeping bag, I had originally intended to purchase two separate bags, and should we choose to, my partner and I could simply zip them together. However, when I spotted the mammoth for around the same price as two separate sleeping bags, I figured it can’t hurt to try. I have been pretty satisfied with my purchase overall. The bag is made with high-quality materials, the outer shell is taffeta, which is designed to repel water and doesn’t feel too plastic, the inner material is a flannel/felt of sorts and did a great job at keeping us warm. I’d definitely recommend it.

    • Dennis Owens

The problem with single sleeping bags is that they tend to become too cramped, and also the insulation is, in my opinion, slightly inferior compared to 2-person sleeping bags. Perhaps it is how the latter was constructed. I’d say it is a good thing that you changed your mind and went for the Teton Mammoth.

  • Sophie Steven

At first, I was very tempted by the Teton Sports Mammoth sleeping bag, however, I think Big Agnes King Solomon 15F Double Wide Down is much more of a better choice for me. It is perfect for 2 people and it also warm.. not too much warm. So even if temperature drops down to zero or even negative, just get a blanket and me and my husband are good to go! Thanks for the head to head comparison Dennis! The blanket is as you denoted here! It was a great advise!

    • Dennis Owens

When looking for a 2-person sleeping bag, the one important factor to consider should be the space and the size of the individuals who will use it. Guessing if it will fit or not will cause problems later on. The Big Agnes is a good choice, and I am pleased that it fits you and your husband comfortably.
