How To Select The Best Camping Chair?

Before you make your decision, you need to understand what the different features are that you should be looking at. In fact, there are several features that you need to consider prior to picking a camping chair.

The material of the frame, seating material, weight capacity, portability, folded and unfolded dimensions, and weight of the product and design of the product are the most crucial features that you should go through while selecting a camping chair.

Frame Material

The material that the frame of your chair is made of is going to influence the ability of the chair. With a stronger material you could end up with more weight capacity, but the chair is going to be heavier overall. With a weaker material you’re going to have the opposite effect.

camping chair frame

It’s important to find a material that’s a good balance between these two things. Materials like aluminum or titanium can help you get enough strength of the average person while not sacrificing too much in the way of weight. You want something you’ll easily be able to carry over longer distances, after all.

Seat Material

The material of your chair’s seat is another important aspect. This is going to add to the weight, the durability and a whole lot more because some materials are going to be more waterproof (or at least water resistant) than others.

You want a material that is likely more synthetic or even nylon and poly fabrics because these are going to provide you with a little bit more in the way of waterproofing and capability of drying out. They’re also still durable enough for most users and hold up over time.

Weight Capacity

When you average together things like the frame material and the seat material you’re going to get the overall weight capacity of the chair that you’re using. You want something that can hold the average person with ease, so you aren’t constantly looking for a different chair or feeling uncomfortable in yours.

woman sitting in camping chair

The best weight capacity should be at least 200 pounds, with many chairs being able to hold at least this and much more. The more your chair can hold the better, but keep in mind that this is going to add to the overall size of the chair and the weight of the chair itself.

Portability

A chair that isn’t easily portable isn’t going to be a very good option when it comes to a camping chair. You need something you can easily throw in the back of a car or in the back of your trailer or even on your back and carry wherever you want it. If the chair isn’t easy to transport it’s not something you’ll want for this purpose.

A good quality camping chair is one that has at least a bag and straps to carry it around and it should definitely fold up at least a little to make it easier to maneuver around. It should be relatively lightweight and it should definitely provide you with a somewhat easy to set up chair when you get done traveling.

Folded and Unfolded Dimensions

Any chair that you’re taking with you traveling needs to pack up small enough that you can move it around and that you can fit the other things that you need around it. You can’t have it taking up too much space in your packed items, after all. Make sure that the folded dimensions, therefore, are small enough for comfort.

folded camping chair

Next, make sure that you’ll be comfortable sitting on the chair when you get it unfolded. If it’s not large enough to keep you comfortable you’re definitely not going to be happy with the space you wasted in bringing it, right? Something that has plenty of space is definitely going to be important.

Weight

The weight of the chair is always going to be an important feature. No matter how comfortable it is or what it’s made of or anything else, how much it actually weighs is what’s going to help you decide whether you’re going to take it with you on that next camping trip or whether you’re going to leave it at home.

If the chair is too lightweight it won’t hold up against much and it may not be good to transport around as it might get damaged. If it’s too heavy it’s going to be difficult to take with you and even though it’s durable enough, you might not be able to carry it when you want to travel.

Design

Of course, just like with anything else, the way the chair looks and the style of it is going to be important in deciding whether or not you like it. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on a chair that you don’t even like the look of, right?

evergreen-camp-chair

The design is going to do more than just make something look good, it’s going to influence the comfort as well. The more comfortable you are in a chair the more you’re going to like it, so make sure that you’re paying attention to the design and what you find the most useful and comfortable when you’re looking at your next camping chair.

I’ve owned a Helinox Chair One for a little over a year and I cannot imagine outdoor life without it.

From day one, it has been put it through its paces. I have taken it camping in rain, snow and shine, taken it backpacking and hiking to some of the most remote places on this planet and even used it for a few weeks at home whilst awaiting delivery of a new couch.

It’s ultra compact size and light weight make it very easy to pack and carry, whilst being strong, durable and comfortable. No question, the best chair in this list.

    • Dennis Owens

The Helinox Chair One is indeed a compact camping chair option, and its construction has been proven to withstand the elements. I’d say this is one of the most worth it purchases you’ll ever have because it ticks all the camping essentials when it comes to sitting requirements.

  • Alex Smallwood

I wanted a lightweight camping chair that’ll pack up quickly and easily for a camping trip. After a few weeks of research, I settled on the Therm-A-Rest Treo, and so far it ticks all the boxes.

Admittedly, I’ve not really had the opportunity to full crash test it, as so far it’s only been on one trip with me. However, there are a few things I can say with some certainty.

This chair is comfortable and built solid. Unlike many camping chairs, you’re able to lean forwards, backwards and to the sides with a fair amount of stability. The support stitching is incredibly strong, a camp friend of mine spent one evening using it with even the slightest hint that it was struggling to hold his weight (he weighs almost 250 lbs). OK, so if you’re a little on the larger side, you may find that your body is pressed up against the frame, however, despite this, it is still incredibly comfortable.

If you’re looking for a chair that packs up to an easy to handle size, is comfortable and strong, you’ll struggle to do better than the Therm-a-rest.

    • Dennis Owens

With its solid construction, low weight, and being known for its stability, the Therm-A-Rest Treo is a great buy. Comfortability is one of the things that is often missed by camping and folding chairs, but the Treo can give enough back support and a really comfortable sitting experience.

  • Brian Edwards

I’ve just bought Alite Designs Mantis chair, so I can’t really say anything about its durability, but the comfort is just outstanding. I use it as a backpacking chair and it’s very stable. In my opinion, the perfectly angled back rest is the most important part of a chair. There’s nothing better than relaxing your back after a long hike. This chair is very light and it can be easily put it into a side pocket on a backpack.

    • Dennis Owens

I remember debating with one of my friends regarding this product. He thinks that the durability is quite questionable because of it being too light. This is one of the lightest chairs you can get right now, and considering how light it is, the material is pretty strong to sustain a heavy load.
