A camping lantern is an excellent tool to have in your collection. Not just because it can light up a campsite at darkness, but it can also be useful if you live in an area prone to power outages or storms. The best camping lanterns will provide you with the light you need to play games at the campsite or to light up your trailer or workspace.

In this list of the options for best camping lantern on amazon, you’ll find something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking a heavy duty lantern to take on a camping road trip around the national parks or a lightweight lantern that could even go backpacking, you’ll find an option in this list.

Important Features

When trying to choose the right camping lantern, it can be hard to sort through all of the different options on the market today. The lantern you choose depends on the activities you need it for and your budget, but for each lantern, you should pay attention to these three main features.

Brunton lightwave amp lantern

Construction: You should be sure to choose a lantern that is well constructed and will hold up to the elements. Lanterns should be sturdy, rubber coated ideally, made from quality materials, and hopefully waterproof.

Brightness: A lantern should be bright. The luminosity of lanterns is measured in lumens, but this measurement can be deceiving. There are a few lanterns on here that claim only a low level of lumens, however, their brightness output, according to customer testimony, is incredibly high.

Battery Life: The final consideration for buying a high-quality lantern is its battery life. Most lanterns will advertise a long battery life, but how this plays out in reality can be different. The best lanterns will be able to provide a strong, steady, high level of light for a long period of time.

Knowing the factors to consider when you search for a good camping lantern, it’s now time to help you out with a few good example, possible the best 10 you can find on the market.

Top Camping Lanterns

Rayovac Sportsman 240 Lumen 3D LED Lantern

Rayovac SE3DLNACOM Sportsman 240 Lumen 3D LED Lantern, Green

Weight: 12.8 ounces

Dimensions: 3.4 x 3.4 x 7.3 inches

Specific Features: This camping lamp comes with 4-watt LEDs that never need to be replaced, 240 lumens that produce high, low, and strobe lights, is durable and water resistant, and this lantern has a lifetime warranty

Best Use: Camping, Night Fishing, Emergency Lighting

Description: Rayovac SE3DLNACOM Sportsman 240 Lumen 3D LED Lantern, Green is a very reliable lantern that has a lot of positive aspects with not too many detractors. Up front, this lantern is a great choice.

First, a note on construction. This lantern is very well built, sturdy and strong, with rubber lining on the bottom and sides and rubber grips. It is a completely reliable lantern that will hold up against the trials of camping.

In terms of usage, it is easy to use, the switch works well, and the low, high, and strobe settings are all exactly as they should be. The battery life is great, and the little emergency beacon that flashes even when the lantern is off has a negligible effect on the battery life.

For the most important aspect, lighting, this lantern really stands out. For its size and price point, it has a clear, cold white light with a surprising brightness. The diffuser works well without the disappointing shadows or lines you sometimes find.

There are really only two criticisms of this lantern, and both of them are fairly small:

  • The tent hook is completely flimsy. It makes no sense when the rest of the lantern is so well built.
  • It can be a bit tricky to put the lantern back together after you change the batteries. But only the first time.

UST 30-Day Lantern

UST 30-Day Lantern

Weight: 1 pound

Dimensions: 7.25 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches

Specific Features: This lantern features rubberized housing, runs 30 days when set to 29 lumens, or 32 hours when set to 300 lumens, a 4 mode electric switch for high, medium, low, and SOS strobe, three 1.4W Nichia LEDs, and is water resistant.

Best Use: Camping, Emergency Lighting

Description: This product is a well-built lantern that lives up to its 30-day claim. UST 30-Day Lantern is a great tool to have in your cupboard if you live in an area that is threatened by hurricanes or power outages and can also be a good tool for longer camping trips.

The most impressive quality of this camping lantern is its battery life. When set to low, it really does last for up to and even sometimes beyond 30 days. The low setting, while not super bright, is enough to see by during a blackout. At medium, this lantern can still last a week.

In terms of lighting, the 300 lumens of this lantern are very bright. Even medium is enough to read by and high will light up a whole room. The three settings are nicer to have than some comparable lantern that only offers 2 settings.

In terms of build, this lantern holds up well, is effectively waterproofed and impact resistant, so it’ll take a beating out on a camping trip. The rubber coating is rugged and the construction is solid.

The only drawback to this lantern is that it lacks a reflector, so it shines your eyes if you try to hold it up to see your surroundings.

All in all, this is a great lantern that holds up well outdoors, and really does last for 30 days. An excellent tool to have in your pack.

Coleman Quad(TM) LED Lantern

Coleman Quad(TM) LED Lantern

Weight: 2.15 pounds

Dimensions: 12.88 x 7.75 x 7.69 inches

Specific Features: This lantern includes four independent light panels that snap into one lantern, lights that recharge while connected to the base, a 75 hour running time, and 190 extra-bright lumens lantern with a 47.5 bright lumens panel.

Best Use: Car Camping

Description: Coleman Quad(TM) LED Lantern is a heavy duty lantern that is a great choice for families going car camping together. The best thing about this lantern is the snap off panels. Basically, you’re buying more than just a lantern, you’re buying a lantern and four personal lights.

These personal lights are super convenient when you need to go to the bathroom at night, search around camp, or want to retreat to the tent for some reading. Everyone else can keep the lantern, and you get your own light source.

In terms of brightness, this lantern really delivers. Even though other lanterns have higher lumens ratings, this lantern is extremely bright, with an effective diffuser so the LEDs aren’t too harsh. It is bright enough for reading and cooking.

The battery life on this lantern is also very reliable. It runs off of 8 D-cell batteries, and can easily last a whole weekend, even if you never turned it off. On top of that, the four individual panels are powered by 3 AAA rechargeable batteries.

There are a few downsides to this lantern, but they definitely don’t outweigh the positives.

  • The lantern does not have a low or nightlight setting, so you may end up stumbling around the camp in the middle of the night looking for it.
  • This lantern can get pretty heavy with 8 D-cell batteries inside. Definitely meant to be set on the table, not carried around extensively.

Overall, this is an excellent lantern that is well thought out, nicely constructed and works great for groups and families.

d.light S20 LED Solar Rechargeable Area Lantern

d.light S20 LED Solar Rechargeable Area Lantern

Weight: 0.57 pounds

Dimensions: 9.5 x 20.5 x 9.5 inches

Specific Features: This lantern comes with two brightness settings, water resistant material, an 8-hour battery life, solar and USB charging capabilities, and a 2-year warranty.

Best Use: Camping, Home, Emergencies

Description: d.light S20 LED Solar Rechargeable Area Lantern is a great choice for camping, but it also has its uses at home. The best thing about this lantern is its solar charging capabilities. Buy one, leave it on all night, then leave it in the window sill to charge during the next day. They work great as a nightlight for kids.

The lantern produces a light that is bright enough to read by, and easily lights up a whole room, but it isn’t blinding. If you have two of them, you’ll be all set.

They really come in handy during power outages, because no matter how long the power is out, you have the ability to recharge them using the sun. And they hold up well over time, as well. After one year, they still go strong.

There really aren’t any downsides to this lantern. If you’re looking for the brightest lantern on the market, this isn’t it. But if you’re searching for a reliable, lightweight, environmentally friendly lantern that works at home and on the road, this is a great choice.

Coleman 5319-700 MicroPacker LED Mini Lantern

Coleman 5319-700 MicroPacker LED Mini Lantern, Yellow

Weight: 6 ounces

Dimensions:  9.5 x 6 x 2.38 inches

Specific Features: This lightweight lantern includes a 2 in 1 design that converts the lantern to a flashlight, lifetime LEDs that never need to be replaced, and a 92-hour runtime.

Best Use: Car camping, backpacking, emergencies

Description: Coleman 5319-700 MicroPacker LED Mini Lantern, Yellow is a great value. In terms of construction, it is a surprisingly solid lantern given its price. You can knock it off the table or window sill without any fear of it breaking.

The battery life on these lanterns is pretty good. They will last for about 2 days on a relatively bright light, bright enough to read by, but by the 3rd day, they will get dim. A tip for using this lantern, if you buy strong alkaline batteries, the light will be much brighter.

A thoughtful aspect of the design of this lantern is the reflector. It is meant to direct the light and stop your lantern from bothering other campers, but it can also come in handy if you are trying to read in your tent at night without bothering your tent mate.

There are two minor downsides to the design of this lantern:

  • The color of the light is a harsh white light.
  • This is not the brightest lantern on the market.

Overall, this is a sturdy, affordable, and very lightweight lantern that provides enough light to let you cook, hang out, and read after dark during your camping trips.

Supernova 300 Lumens Ultra Bright LED Camping Lantern

Supernova 300 Lumens Ultra Bright LED Camping and Emergency Lantern

Weight: 14.6 ounces

Dimensions: 3.2 x 3.2 x 7.2 inches

Specific Features: This lantern includes 300 lumens of light, high-efficiency LEDs that work for up to 6 days, a slow pulse LED indicator light and a compact size with durable water resistance construction.

Best Use: Camping and Emergencies

Description: Supernova 300 Lumens Ultra Bright LED Camping and Emergency Lantern is a smaller model of lantern, but can be a great choice if you’re looking for a high-quality compact option. The best thing about this lantern is its brightness.

With 300 lumens, this lantern lights up space almost better than electric lighting. It is a great tool to have around the house if you live in an area prone to power outages.

In terms of construction, this lantern is a winner. The unit is compact and well manufactured, with rubber coating to keep it safe from falls and damage. There is a handle on top, and a hook on the bottom helping you hang the lantern up inside your tent and use it for reading.

The battery life is fine, not incredible but it’ll hold up. However, some people find that it is difficult to replace the batteries the first time, as you must make sure the red arrows on the base are lined up, before opening or closing the unit.

Overall, if you’re looking for a very bright, lightweight, and compact lantern for camping or to use in case of home emergencies, the Supernova is a great choice.

Black Diamond 2015 Apollo Lantern

Black Diamond 2015 Apollo Lantern

Weight: 1.44 pounds

Dimensions: 5 x 3 x 3 inches

Specific Features: This lantern comes with QuadPower LEDs with 200 lumens on its maximum setting, a dual reflector system, a power meter to display the battery level or charge status, a dimming function, and fold down legs to increase the lanterns height.

Best Use: Camping, Backpacking, Home Emergencies

Description: Black Diamond 2015 Apollo Lantern is a good choice and very popular, often compared favorably to Coleman brand lanterns. However, there are a few complaints, which we will hit on at the end.

As for the positives, this lantern is constructed very well, it is small and compact but sturdy and well crafted, with a very thoughtful design.

The legs extend out to prop it up, and it remains sturdy even in this position, plus it looks like a rocket ship. The lantern also includes a hanging hook so you can use it to read in the tent.

Concerning the brightness, this lantern really delivers. At its highest point, it hits 200 lumens. The best aspect though is the dimmer switch. This tool allows you to control the light settings as a flow from 200 lumens down to 10, so you can find your perfect setting.

This unit takes 4 AA batteries, which means you don’t need to have heavy D-cell batteries on hand at all times. The four batteries last a long time, especially if you use the dimmer switch.

For the negatives, there are two main complaints about this item:

  1. It can be difficult to remove the batteries, as they are not spring loaded.
  2. Some units sometimes come with flawed battery packs, and there have been several complaints about the plastic melting, or unit going dead after 3 or 4 uses.

Overall, this lantern comes in a unique and well-built design and offers a high amount of light with good battery life. Just be aware that sometimes there are problems with the batteries.

MPOWERD Luci Original – Inflatable Solar Light

MPOWERD Luci Original - Inflatable Solar Light

Weight: 2 pounds

Dimensions: 5.25 x 1 x 5.25

Specific Features: This lantern is powered by the sun, with no need for batteries, and can last up to 12 hours on one 7-hour charge. It is inflatable, collapsible and lightweight, with full waterproofing. The 10 LEDs shine in 3 settings, and the lantern features a charge indicator for battery life.

Best Use: Camping, Patio, Home Emergencies

Description: MPOWERD Luci Original – Inflatable Solar Light is a really great option for people looking to escape from batteries, or who want an ultra-lightweight lantern option.

For starters, let’s talk about construction. The solar panels are located on the bottom of the lantern, and the lantern itself is collapsible. If you’re out hiking or camping or canoeing, just leave the lantern on top of your pack, bottom up, for 6 to 8 hours and you’ll have enough light for the nighttime.

If you’re using it at home, leave it on a windowsill all day, or out on a patio table.

The waterproofing and buoyancy of this lantern are another big selling points. It can accompany you on some pretty intense outdoor adventures and hold up against the stress. Another positive for backpackers especially is that this lantern is extremely lightweight.

For brightness, this little lantern delivers. Charge it in the sun for 6 to 8 hours and you have expected 6 to 8 hours of bright light. It is very comfortable to read in the light of this lantern. A small design anomaly might be the fact that this lantern actually lights up a space better if you place it upside down.

For the downsides, there are really only 2:

  1. Lack of a power charge. Your only option is solar power.
  2. The hanging straps are really cheap and break easily.

Overall, this solar powered, and collapsible lantern is an excellent choice for outdoor lovers who want a lightweight option that won’t take up space in their pack and can free them from the chain of batteries.

Best Use: Camping, Home Emergencies, Fishing

Description: Streamlight 44931 The Siege Lantern is one of the best lanterns on the market, and if it fits into your budget and lifestyle, it can be an excellent choice.

When considering construction, this lantern has been very well designed. It is coated in rubber from the top to the bottom, such that it almost sticks to your hand. If dropped, it will not get damaged.

The rubber handle on top also locks into place securely, has rubber, and is easy to grab onto even in the dark. Even the D rings on the top and the bottom are secure and well designed, so you can hang this lantern without fear of dropping it.

For brightness, this lantern offers a high of 340 lumens, bright enough to light up an entire room indoors, and plenty bright enough for a card game at night on a camping trip.

The 295-hour low light battery saving mode is a great feature as well, providing enough light to function by while preserving battery life. It could be very useful during an extended power outage.

Perhaps one detraction could be that the lantern advertises a 30 hour running time, however, when tested the lantern stayed bright for about 15 hours.

As for the batteries, this lantern takes 3 AA batteries, and also is compatible with rechargeable batteries, however, they are not included in the price. The on/off switch has an indicator light to tell you the level of the batteries, and when they run out, it is easy to change the batteries even in the dark,

Overall, this lantern is well thought out and beautifully designed. It is one of the best lanterns on the market and a great choice for families or car campers looking for a rugged and long lasting option.

Ultra Bright LED Lantern – Camping Lantern

Ultra Bright LED Lantern - Camping Lantern

Weight: 362 grams

Dimensions: 3.5 x 3.6 x 5.2 inches

Best Use: Camping, Hiking, Home Emergency

Description: Ultra Bright LED Lantern – Camping Lantern is an excellent choice for camping trips and as a home accessory.

The 30 LEDs that make up the lantern release little to no heat, yet have a 60 lumens output. 60 lumens might not sound like much, but when put to the test, this lantern is bright! So bright, it can easily light up an indoor space, a whole campsite, or the inside of a trailer.

Very satisfying in terms of brightness.

For battery life, this lantern also scores high points. It takes 3 AA batteries, but with the energy efficient LED’s, these batteries can last for days and days.

Regarding construction, this lantern is fairly sturdy, well built, with a nicely designed handle for carrying or hanging. The lantern is collapsible, and turns on automatically when pulled to its full height.

The only complaint about this lantern comes from a few users who claim parts of the lantern broke within a few uses, including the handle.

Deciding on which lantern you should have when camping depends on the type of camping you want.
I own a Coleman Puck Lantern. The battery life is amazing, I ran it for almost 20 hours when there was a power outage and there were still a lot of power left. It’s versatile and I like how it can be rechargeable via USB. The most important feature is that it has a high lumen output.

    • Dennis Owens

You can never go wrong with a Coleman. It has a proven track record for camping requirements and their reliability is unquestionable. Great feedback regarding the Puck Lantern, and I agree that its high lumens output and the USB rechargeability are some of its key features.

  • Daniel Hardwick

I purchased the Rayovac Sportsman lantern around 2 months ago and continue to be pleasantly surprised. Admittedly, it was a little more compact than I’d originally expected, however, in hindsight, I’ve found this to be a positive, as it’s easier to pack and carry.

It is well-built, proving itself to be durable enough to be dropped or knocked off the table, the output is especially bright, considering its compact size and has a surprisingly long battery life, using high-quality batteries I was able to achieve around 50 hours of run time on the highest setting. Perfect for night fishing, camping, or to keep for emergencies or power outages.

    • Dennis Owens

Don’t let the size of the Rayovac steer you away because this little baby packs a punch when it comes to illumination. It is well-built and despite its small size, it does have a very long battery life.

  • Eugene Anderson

I read a lot of reviews before buying the Black Diamond for camping trips. It really impressed me, because I didn’t expect so much light from such a small lantern. The control of light output ranges from 10 to 200 and it can meet all your needs. Later I bought one more for my car, and it’s been very useful. Batteries last for a very long time. I read somewhere that some people had problems with the melting of certain parts, but I didn’t notice anything at all.

    • Dennis Owens

Lanterns can overheat when used incorrectly, which can cause the wirings and plastic parts to melt or become brittle. The Black Diamond is such a gem, especially when considering how small this lantern is. Overall, a great camping lantern to be considered.
