Features To Consider When Selecting Your Tent

Indeed, there are a number of features to consider in such a situation. The type of tent you choose depends on your specific requirements, but as a whole, it is advisable to choose a product that is lightweight, easy to carry around, stable, and waterproof. Also, one must be ready to endure extreme weather conditions, worse than those predicted in the weather reports.

Space to move around

Space is the most important consideration here. This is going to determine how comfortably you spend your camping days.

For starters, keep in mind the duration of the trip. If you plan to camp for a longer period of time, you would need a bigger tent to fit in all your belongings. The number of people living in the tent is also important.

For instance, you might choose to stay alone in the tent or stay with your immediate family inside. The size of your tent should reflect that number of people.

large tent.JPG

Also, don’t forget the physique of the people living inside the tent. If you choose a two person tent, it will go well only for two average sized people. If one of them is too tall or heavy, it might get cramped for space.

Weather Compatibility

The weather is another important consideration here. Tents can be grouped into different categories based on the weather situations they are made for. For instance, if you are going camping during the summer months, a summer tent would be ideal.

This is essentially a lightweight material which is not very compatible with heavy rainfall or cooler temperatures. Also, this would include a ventilated air space for facilitating airflow.

opened tent

If you are unsure of the weather or are going camping for a longer period of time, a two-season tent would be more ideal. This could withstand seasons like spring, summer and the fall. These tents can withstand storms but are not designed for the snowy months.

Similarly, there are four-season tents and expedition tents, the latter being prone to more rigorous rainfall and snow and mountainous terrain.

Water Resistance

The rain is one of the most unpredictable aspects of the weather. You must always be prepared for a rainy day during camping, even if the weather forecast doesn’t predict it. This is essential as you always want to carry a tent that can handle the unpleasant surprise of rainfall.

tent in the snow

The tent must be able to handle moisture both on the inside and the outside. A seam-taped tent with waterproof covering can effortlessly protect the inhabitants from the rainand keeps the tent protected as well. Having a ventilated rain fly might prove to be useful especially because it allows the users to have adequate air circulation.

Portability and Setup

Ideally, since a large part of a camping expedition will include traveling, it is imperative to look for tents that are lightweight and portable. This is especially true if you’re covering long distances on foot.

For instance, between a nylon and a polyester tent, the former is more lightweight and is thus the preferred choice. If no heavy storms are expected, a nylon tent with aluminum poles can work wonders during the camping trip.

setting up a tent

A backpacking tent is another good option, as it is lightweight and compact. However, if you are traveling a huge distance by car, a fiberglass tent would be ideal, being heavy and durable. Also, you must ensure that the tents do not have long setup procedures that might work to your disadvantage for the camp.

Price

The price of the tent or the amount you want to spend on such a product is a rather relative concept. If you are a frequent camper, it would be best to purchase a durable and portable product even though it might be a little tough on the pockets. This is because you need the tent for a longer period of time.

On the other hand, if you do not camp regularly, buying a cheaper tent should be enough. This would be well-suited to a particular weather or terrain, depending upon your camping location and time.

small and large tents

Keep in mind the features of the tent that are most important and make sure you’re getting the best tent that you can, relying on the cost only as a final selector and not as the first and only important detail. If you’re not careful you could end up with a tent that’s not good for much if you only pay attention to the cost.

Don’t know about other models, but Big Agnes Fly Creek 2 Platinum Tent is actually a good nylon tent. Even though it has only one door and a small vestibule, the tent is well ventilated. I used it in the forest under the trees and on a rocky surface in winter and I was warm. The floor is ultralight, so you’d better take a good thick blanket to sleep on it.

    • Dennis Owens

The Big Agnes Fly Creek 2 Platinum Tent is a really dependable model, and unlike other survival tents, this is very lightweight yet extremely durable. Ventilation is also one of the main features of this tent, owing it from the nylon material.

  • Calvin Burke

I had Big Agnes lynx pass 2 about four years ago and I think I’ve used it for 200 days already. It’s light weight and durable. The price is really worth it because I had a cheaper tent which only lasts for a year. If you are looking for a quality tent, you must keep in mind that you get what you pay for. But it also depends on how you handle your tent .

    • Dennis Owens

Investing in a survival tent is a good move because these tents can survive the test of harsh elements and the wear and tear of usual use. A tent of good quality should withstand moderate use to say the least.
