A good action camera for hunting can be the difference between missing your shots and making your shots. Being able to upload footage of your performance onto a computer and play it back in slow motion is an incredible tool for bettering your accuracy.

On top of that, it’s just cool to be able to watch an epic hunt once you get back home. But choosing the right camera can be tricky. Some cameras don’t hold up well in rugged conditions, others capture grainy, flickering footage. Luckily, we’ve narrowed down the choices and present to you the best action cameras for hunting on the market.

Important Features to Consider

There are many different factors that go into choosing the right action camera for hunting, and you need to make sure you know why you want to buy one, and what you want to do with it.

Action camera in the hand

That being said, here are four criteria to use when choosing the right action camera for hunting.

Footage Quality

HD footage is everywhere these days, and for good reason. You don’t need to deal with grainy, shaky, low-quality footage of your hunts anymore.

Many cameras offer 720p and 1080p HD capture, with the ability also to take stills that look amazing. Impress your friends by showing them crystal clear footage of the legendary weekend you just had.

Mounts

Not all cameras are made for every kind of activity. Some cameras come with mounts for a bow, for a rifle, or for a shotgun.

Action Camera on the bow

You need to make sure you buy a camera that is built for your style of hunting or be ready to pay extra for additional parts.

Lightweight

Perhaps this seems like a no-brainer, but it needs to be said. You want to make sure you buy a lightweight camera that you can mount to your gun or bow without having it obstruct your ability to focus, aim, and shoot. Most of the cameras on this list are under 1 pound.

Low Light Filming

Not all cameras can shoot high-quality footage in low lighting. If you hunt at night, or if you’re active during dusk and dawn, make sure you choose a camera that functions well in those low light settings.

We’ve done our best to highlight which cameras work well in low light, and which cameras only work in the daylight.

Let’s Aim for The Market!

My wife purchased the Moultrie hat camera for my most recent birthday ahead of a planned bear hunt and I’ve been pleased as punch with it.

The video and sound quality are good, though, I would say the video quality is a little better than the sound. It is easy to operate and it allowed me to get some great footage of the hunt, however, I would recommend that you read the instructions fully and practice using the camera before taking on a hunt, as although I was successful in capturing footage of the bear I was hunting, I actually missed the money shot (i.e. the actual shooting) as my head was tilted at the time.

One of the best gifts I’ve ever received and one I’d personally recommend.

    • Shawn Harrison

I’ve been hearing some issues about this camera as well in terms of audio quality. It is not that bad, but compared to how clear the videos it can produce, it is really a bit underwhelming. I’d still recommend this, however, as a learning device, to make the most out of your hunting and outdoor experience.

  • Liam Henderson

The iON CamoCam Realtree Xtra camera is amazing for the price. Its small size means it can be attached to either the barrel of my bow or on the stabilizer without adding too much weight or compromising the shot. The video quality is surprisingly good for a budget camera, it has a wide viewing angle allowing you to capture a large area and, it works equally well in both low light and daytime conditions. For the price, the iON CamoCam simply cannot be beaten.

    • Shawn Harrison

I agree with you, Liam. The Xtra is a camera that offers a lot of great features considering how reasonably-priced this device is. Very lightweight, durable, and the photos it can produce are nothing short of amazing. Overall, a great product.

  • George Miller

My son had difficulties with aiming and shooting, so I bought ShotKam camera to help him. He was a beginner and now after just a few months his shooting skills have improved significantly. I could help him without a camera, but only with the things I saw. ShotKam allowed me to see much more. So, if you want to speed up the process of learning it’s perfect for you. I also analyzed and improved my shooting skills, which was fun and useful.

    • Shawn Harrison

ShotKam is a good starting camera. It is very easy to use, durable, and takes great pictures. It is a good call getting your son with this camera as his learning tool, and I’m sure he’ll improve his skills from it.
