For a person to learn and perfect his skills in throwing the knives, you will first need to practice this art and for your learning to be effective, you will most probably need the best materials. This means, finding the best knives in the market.

Throwing knives which are of the best quality, are usually made using some specific materials and this always guarantees the knife to serve you for a long period of time. These knives always have some unique designs and of a specifically required weight. These knives are always designed in a manner that it will give the user some a very easy time when using them.

These throwing knives usually come in different shapes, sizes and designs. This shows that for a well-skilled person, you will have a lot of variety to choose from. When you want to invest on throwing knives, you need to have carefully planned it. Having done some research on throwing knives, you will notice that the difference between poorly made knives and quality knives can be evidently seen.

Low-quality knives, usually have blades that are made using poor metal. This only has the ability to dent and scratch easily. They will eventually end up breaking after a few throws, besides, they can also break just by one attempt of you hitting a hard target.

Knife throwing

When you go out to shop for good and nice throwing knives, you should be looking for those knives with blades that are made of a stainless steel metal sheet. This always will make sure that your knives stay for long. A high-quality knife will always distinguish itself from the others by its sturdy and pointed tip.

They will also have smooth handles this usually helps by allowing a nice clean release when coming out from your hand during the throw.

For the purposes of throwing, these knives should just be having a dull edge. You also need to find a knife with a particular weight suitable for throwing. The knife must also be having a straight handle apart from the dull edge, this will keep you safe when throwing. Remember to always go for those knives with pointed tips.

Blade Features

By now, we all must be having an idea that throwing knives usually are of different styles. The designs usually vary with regards to the blade style, point design, handle appearance, and handle curve and the grip features. The handles and the blades can always be different from different models.

Throwing knives features

The reason why you should use a knife with a dull blade is because using knives with a sharp blade will usually disadvantage you when it comes to the throwing techniques. They will limit you to only some type of techniques.

Always be keen when choosing these knives and go for the ones with blades made of stainless steel. Sometimes the metal can bend due to its ability to become soft but when this occurs, a repair can be done using just a hammer.

Throwing Knife Handles

Just like a lot of throwing knives being different when it comes to weight, blade style, and length, they also have different handles. You should also be considering the type of knife handle when you go out to shop for throwing knives.

The handle usually plays a very important role as it usually dictates how the knife will be released from the hand, how fast it spins, the pattern it takes while spinning and also its ability to hit and pierce through the target when thrown.

The following are some of the materials used to make the handles.

  • Wood, this is usually suitable for those people who have smaller hands or if you just like a weapon that delivers a nice comfortable grip. The only problem with wood handles however is, the piece of wood are usually fitted on both sides of the metal part of the blade. The woods then eventually brakes off when the rivets used gets sheared off.
  • Rubber or plastic, these are also some of the materials that are mostly used to make the handles and they also do provide a great user experience. But just like the wooden handles, they are also prone to cracking and breaking after the rivet are eventually worn out.
  • Handle-less this is not what it seems to sound like. This means that both the knife and the blade are all in one place.

Some other type of handles includes those made from bones, brass guards, and stag horns.

Knife for throwing

It is also worth knowing that all these latter materials do not always withstand the impact that takes place every time when a wood target is hit repeatedly.

Things You Should Avoid

When you go out to shop for throwing knives, you need to be a little bit keener as this is usually serious task. You should not just wake up and go buy a knife without even doing some little research about it. You need to at least do some consultation from other who have experience in knife throwing, read out the knife reviews, and check out the features making the knife unique.

Well, below are just some of the things you will need to stay away from when shopping for knives.

Pommels

These are some small counterweights that are usually attached to the end of the knife handle. Apart from it offering some decoration for the knife, it also helps in preventing the sudden accidents that might occur as a result of the knife slipping off your hand.

Beautiful as it may look, pommels are not always a good feature when it comes to throwing knives. This is mainly because of the rivets which are said to portray some characteristics of slicing off exactly on the interface.

3 Silver throwing knives

A few experts actually do recommend the use of the handle-less knives because pommels or handles will always give you some hard time when throwing.

Knives fitted with rubber handles can also be difficult to use because of the weight added on by the handle and this can interfere with the balance of your knife.

Knives with hollow and stag handles

The main reason you should stay away from these is simply because they have a tendency of breaking easily. It is recommended that you go for knives with solid and sturdy handles and for the purposes of visibility, you can consider the handles wrapped with a cord instead.

Carbon or spring steel weapons

Do not go for knives made of these type of materials. They will always break with a lot of ease due to the impact when you take repetitive strikes on a target made of wood.

Folding knives

Really? We both know that these are usually not good for throwing right? On these knives, there are usually some hinge pins which most of the time ends up becoming loose.

Folding knife

On some occasions, your knife might entirely break. Always go for a knife that has a fixed blade, this makes up a really nice rugged weapon.

Blades that are poorly affixed

Avoid purchasing knives with blades that are not fully connected the handle. All these features always make the weapon become weak and can make them break easily. With all these in mind, let us now look at some of the best throwing knives currently in the market.

I remember when I was a teenager and my father taught me to work with throwing knives. Unfortunately, I then went to another city and so still have not started to do it. But the desire remains! What models would you recommend for a beginner? What is the most difficult in this case? Where to begin? Now I have some free time and I’ll try to do it.
Thanks for the article, learned a lot of new things. Good luck!

    • Dennis Owens

Congratulations on rekindling an old hobby. Basically everything on this article can be a good starting set to sharpen your knife throwing skills. Good luck on remastering your knife-throwing ability!

A friend recommended buying the pack of United Cutlery GH2033 Gil Hibben Competition Triple Knife Throwing Set with Sheath. On the first day after a little practice, I even trained to hit the target (almost)!
Knives are good, made of quality stainless steel, have a comfortable pointed form. I don’t know how often they need to be ground, but knives look very sharp, can easily get stuck in the bark of a tree. By the way, as the name implies, it also sold with a leather sheath, which is nice.

    • Dennis Owens

The Gil Hibben Competition Triple Knife is a well-balanced throwing knife and is a great choice. Just be careful, like handling any other knife as these can be very sharp.
