Things to Consider Before Buying

Purpose and IPX Ratings

Think about what you’ll need this tracker for. Even if you’re here for a waterproof device, that means different things in terms of your activity. From IPX0 to IPX4, meaning from no water resistance to water splashes resistance, these measurements show that a device is not waterproof.

A waterproof tracker has to at least have an IPX5 rating so you can use it at least when it’s raining. An IPX5 or IPX6 device can also be mounted on a bike, and it can still work if you’re peddling through puddles.

But if you’re interested in swimming, get an IPX7 device that allows you submerging it to water up to 3 feet. If you want to use this tracker for diving, you’ll need an IPX8 rating.

Measurements and Notifications

The measurements offered relate to your purpose as well. If you want to use this device for running, you’ll want something that keeps track of distance, steps, maybe even has a GPS mode or ability to connect to your GPS. You might also want a heart rate monitor if you’re doing high-impact workouts or a sleep monitor to plan your rest.

running with heart rate monitor

There are various other notifications you might like to take into account, like calls, texts, social media messages or alarms and reminders. A phone-finding or anti-lost feature is a plus too.

Craftsmanship

The main thing you want is for your tracker to have the stated waterproof rating. But you’ll also need to look at how easy-to-read the display is, and how comfortable the wristband is to wear.

Make sure you check the overall weight, so you won’t get anything too heavy that proves uncomfortable during your workouts. A very bulky display is another thing to watch out for.

Battery Life

Of course, a long battery life is desirable as opposed to an item that needs recharging every day. However, it’s a bonus if you can recharge it fast and with no additional operations like disassembling it or using a cable.

fitbit on hand

Besides, having a battery life indicator or low-battery alert is another plus. That way, you can recharge your watch before exercising so you’re always good to go. Or, you’ll plan your workouts accordingly, taking a break or stopping when you get the low-battery tone.

Price

There are obviously less expensive trackers on the market, but these aren’t necessarily of a poorer quality. They just meet more basic functions, but you can still get accurate stats. You’ll even get nice bonuses like satisfying warranties, long battery lives and helpful support teams.

On the other hand, the more expensive trackers are really worth their steep prices for people who need versatile and on-the-spot measurements regarding more advanced stats, predictions, and meal plans. That said, take a look at some of the high-quality products we’ve reviewed below.

Best products on today’s market

These products cover the entire prize pool, and each has its own merits. We’ve reviewed them in terms of the above features, so you can get the one that fits best.

Waterfi Waterproof Fitbit AltaWaterfi Waterproof Fitbit Alta

Price: Approx. $200

Weight: 8 ounces

Dimensions: 8.8 x 4.1 x 1.6 inches

Specific features: IPX8, tracks steps, type of exercise, calories burned, sleep quality, various notifications, 5 days battery life, interchangeable bands, 1-year warranty

Best use: Swimming

Description: The Waterfi Waterproof Fitbit Alta is great for swimming, diving or the sweatiest of workouts thanks to its IPX8 rating. That means you can submerge it underwater of 210 feet and it will still be fully functional.

However, this device wasn’t necessarily created just for swimming. You can use it on your wrist for tracking steps, or for other exercises. You’ll get the calories burned, along with the type of exercises you’re doing. Or, you can use it to monitor your sleep quality as well as logging your meals.

This gadget allows you to connect with other friends who wear it, and compare stats because it syncs with the Fitbit app. However, this isn’t a perfect sync. Sometimes you can see some information which you know to be correct on the tracker that doesn’t appear on the app and the other way around.

However, thanks to its 1-year warranty, this is an issue you can fix with the very helpful support team. We also like that this tracker gives various call and text notifications, along with calendar notifications to keep you up to speed regardless of what you’re doing.

The 5 days battery life is another plus, as well as the fact that you can change the wrist strap if the size Small doesn’t fit. You can recharge the battery too, whenever you need it. However, the 8 ounces overall weight might be a bit heavy for some users.

PROS:

  • Versatile
  • Long battery life
  • Precise

CONS:

  • Heavyish
  • Not a perfect sync with the app

Related: The Fitbit Alta HR Screen Protector is just what you need to keep the screen of this watch safe from all possible impacts.

Toprime Fitness TrackerToprime Fitness Tracker

Price: Approx. $37

Weight: 1 ounces

Dimensions: 8.7 x 0.8 x 0.4 inches

Specific features: IP67, heart rate tracker, OLED screen, sleep monitor, Bluetooth 4.0 connection, social connection, i-Fit app, 90 mAh battery, 14 days standby battery life

Best use: Running

Description: The Toprime Fitness Tracker has some advantages when compared to the previous tracker. To start with, it’s almost six times cheaper and weighs eight times less. At an overall 1 ounce weight, this is considered one of the lightest devices in its category.

Besides, it has a longer battery life at 14 days on standby and probably a week of constant use. The needed time to recharge its battery doesn’t take longer than a couple of hours. So you can get this tracker up and running in no time, but you’ll have to disassemble it before charging.

However, this device can’t be used for deep underwater diving. The IP67 rating makes it resistant to being submerged in water up to 3 feet though. So you can use it as a heart rate tracker with everything that implies, including counting calories.

Or, you can monitor your sleep, running course, put on music remotely, and get call, text and social media notifications. You’ll have to download the i-Fit app for that and then connect it to your smartphone.

The downside is that sometimes these measurements aren’t extremely accurate, certainly not as they would be with a chest monitor. But they’re satisfying enough, especially for the convenient price. Besides, the touch OLED screen is easy to read and wide enough.

PROS:

  • Versatile
  • Light
  • Inexpensive

CONS:

  • Not the most accurate
  • Needs disassembling before charging

Related: If you like this device but you’d prefer a different color, the Fitbit Alta Band is the right place to start. You can get plenty of different colors, so you’ll be sure to match all your outfits.

Wesoo K1 Fitness WatchWesoo K1 Fitness Watch

Price: Approx. $30

Weight: 0.7 ounces

Dimensions: 9.4 x 0.6 x 0.4 inches

Specific features: IPX7, workout tracker, sleep monitor, various alarms, replaceable wristband, built-in USB, 100% money-back guarantee, 2 years warranty, lifetime technical support, 45mAh rechargeable Li-polymer battery

Best use: Low impact workouts

Description: The Wesoo K1 Fitness Watch is a great tracker for low impact workouts because it helps keep track of calories burned, how long you’ve been working out, etc. It has a step monitor too, but that’s not so reliable, which is why we’d recommend it for other workouts except walking.

But if you’re not interested in the exact number of steps, but rather time, distance and an estimate of the calories burned, this gadget is great. Another reason why we’d recommend it for low impact exercise is that it doesn’t have a built-in heart monitor which would be more appropriate for high-impact exercises.

With its various alarms, call, texts, calendar notifications, this is a good way to stay connected to your life even while exercising. The feature we love the most is its built-in USB for a very easy charging process of its resistant 45 mAh Li-polymer battery.

The replaceable wristband looks good and it’s resistant too, you’ll be getting an additional blue band with this item. The IPX7 rating means this tracker withstands rainy weather, as well as being submerged in water up to 3.28 feet. We also love the very helpful support and warranties that consists of 100% money-back guarantee, 2 years warranty, and lifetime technical support.

PROS:

  • No adapter needed
  • Great support team

CONS:

  • No heart monitor
  • Not always accurate

Related: If you don’t like the included blue wristband, you can always color it yourself and personalize it according to your own taste with the Sharpie Electro Pop Permanent Markers. This is a great gift for teens or kids who want to express their own style.

LOLG Activity TrackerLOLG Activity Tracker

Price: Approx. $40

Weight: 3 ounces

Dimensions: 1.74 x 0.87 x 0.48 inches

Specific features: IP68, 24/7 heart rate monitor, sleep monitor, call notifications, multiple sports modes, connects via an app with your smartphone, 0.96 inch OLED, 7-10 days standby time

Best use: Various sports

Description: The LOLG Activity Tracker is a truly versatile item, not just because it gives you various measurements that include distance and calories, but also because it has multiple sports modes. With that in mind, you can adjust it to your current activities, which could include anything from running to badminton. Or you can use it for swimming since its IP68 rating means this gadget withstands being submerged in 5 feet of water.

The good news is that with such a variety of modes, you can personalize this tracker and get the calculations you need for each sport. You’ll also get plenty of reminders, calls, SMS, or even notifications when you haven’t moved in a while.

The sleep monitor works great too, and all these features can be activated once you connect the tracker to its app. Just keep in mind that these measurements aren’t stored in your tracker’s memory and that it only works when you connect it to the app.

We like its clear, 0.96 inch OLED, as well as the long 7-10 days standby time. However, it needs to be charged daily if you’re actually using it. The included 24/7 heart rate monitor is another plus, particularly for the more vigorous training sessions.

PROS:

  • Versatile
  • Accurate
  • Inexpensive

CONS:

  • Needs constant app connection to work
  • Needs daily recharges

Related: If you like fitness, you might want to consider adding resistance training to your routine. At this point, the Kllarmant Resistance Bands can really do wonders.

Polar A360 Fitness TrackerPolar A360 Fitness Tracker

Price: $126 – $222

Weight: 1 ounce

Dimensions: 0.5 x 0.92 inches

Specific features: IPX8, heart rate monitor, training guidance, touch screen, smart notifications, inactivity alerts, customizable

Best use: Complex training

Description: The Polar A360 Fitness Tracker is the best tracker in our category for complex, prolonged training that requires setting long-term fitness goals and getting personalized guidance to reach them. We love this little gadget because it’s small and compact, and it’s comfortable to wear.

You’ll get heart readings too, but these are not always accurate. You’ll mostly get an idea of how hard you’re exercising, although its other features are more reliable. These include keeping track of your workouts, counting the calories you’re burning, and other walking indicators like steps and distance.

The sleep monitor measurements are fairly accurate too, you’ll get various smart notifications as well as inactivity alerts. The display is easy to read, the app to which it connects works good and it has a resistant battery.

There are three sizes for the wristband, and three other color patterns to choose from apart from this black model. However, these bands aren’t that resistant for the long, aggressive workouts, and can even come undone while you sleep.

With an IPX8 rating, this device is submersible to water up to 98 feet. However, the display is difficult to read underwater, and it’s not great for swimming.

PROS:

  • Easy-to-read display
  • Great app
  • Resistant battery

CONS:

  • Inaccurate heart rate measurements
  • Flimsy band

Related: If black seems too common for you, you can always get a different color for the wristband. The green Polar A360 Wristband is a cool replacement band, and you’ll be sure it fits this watch perfectly.

Weight: 4 ounces

Specific features: IPX5, blood pressure and heart rate monitor, call and message notifications, no-cable charging, 1-3 days operating time, connects with GPS, 0.87 inches OLED

Best use: Running

Description: The TONSUM Fitness Tracker is great for running or other high-impact activities for which you might need to know your heart rate and blood pressure measurements. This is great for running, though, because it connects with your phone’s GPS so you can keep very precise track of your distance and where you’re running.

And with an IPX5 rating, you can confidently use this tracker even in bad weather when it rains, or take a shower with it on after your workout. However, this device isn’t for swimming or diving because it’s not submersible under water.

You’ll also get various other helpful notifications for calls and messages, including via SMS or other social networks. The operating time varies between 1 and 3 days, depending on how much you’re using this device, but the good news is that you can charge it via the wristband, with no cable needed.

The 0.87 inch OLED screen is easy to read, but don’t attempt to use this device for monitoring your sleep.

PROS:

  • Accurate
  • Resistant
  • Inexpensive

CONS:

  • Low IPX rating
  • Short battery life
  • No sleep monitoring

Related: The arVin Heart Rate Watch is another great product that would complement this fitness tracker. That’s because it gives out more specialized heart readings for people who are interested in their health, all the while measuring your blood pressure and oxygen levels. Price: Approx. $250

Weight: 2.08 ounces

Dimensions: 1.9 x 0.5 x 2.2 inches

Specific features: IPX8, detailed VO2 max, recovery time and race time, running measurements, smart notifications, live tracking

Best use: Running

Description: The Garmin Forerunner 920XT Watch is another great device for running, and you can see that in the additional, specialized features that come with a substantial price increase. So you’ll be getting detailed VO2max, recovery time and race time estimators so you’ll know the volume of oxygen in your blood, as well as how much time you’ll need for resting or for your next race.

If you’re getting the HRM-RunTM monitor, you’ll know additional precise info about your pace, how much you’re wobbling and how long you’re in contact with the ground. These complement the speed, distance and elevation measurements. But you’ll also receive all sorts of smart notifications as well as live tracking to share online.

However, the screen is a bit dim to read during the day, which might make it harder for you to keep track of your stats. The built-in GPS is also a bit off when it comes to swimming, and you’ll have to recharge the battery on a daily basis if you’re using this device intensively. However, with an IPX8 rating, you can dive and swim with zero worries.

PROS:

  • Proficient
  • Accurate
  • Detailed

CONS:

  • Short battery life
  • Dim screen
  • Inaccurate GPS for swimming
