You have hiked all day, you’ve set up camp, you built a fire, you’ve had your supper, and the sun has gone done. You are ready to climb in your tent and relax. Your feet especially need a break. You slip off your boots, give your feet a rub and slide them into a wonderful pair of mens down booties.

They keep your feet extra warm on a cold night. You and your partner are sharing thoughts about the day as you drift off to sleep. This is the life! And all with warm feet!

The converse of that story goes something like this: you hiked all day, had to ford a stream so your feet got damp, by the time you got to your camping spot the sun was going down and the wind picked up. By the time you pitched your tent it was late. The group was so tired and cold everyone decided to eat a cold snack and go to bed.

You climb in your tent hungry and half-frozen. You slip off your boots to find a blister on your ice cube feet. By the time you get settled your partner has fallen asleep so there is no conversation. Even in your sleeping bag, your feet are still so cold you don’t sleep very well. Sure wish you had a pair of down booties.

We’ve all been there, spending that cold, sleepless night because we weren’t thoroughly prepared. You have probably heard it said if your extremities aren’t warm, then your body isn’t warm either. And, if you are an avid backpacker you want to make sure to take care of your feet. After all, it is your feet that carry you and your gear in and out of the woods!

Before we compare some of the best men’s down booties, we are going to discuss some terms and elements to consider when determining which bootie will suit you the best.

Fancy Footwork: Glossary

As with any sports garment, there are particular terms and definitions that need to be detailed. You wouldn’t think there would be much to a down bootie, but you will be surprised. Here are a few definitions to consider.

waterproof down booties

DWR: Durable Water Repellent – this is a treatment that is applied to a fabric to keep moisture out

EVA: Ethylene-vinyl acetate used in making foam such as insoles for shoes and, wait for it – booties!

Instep: the top of your foot toward the ankle.

Types of down: 100% down is softer, longer lasting, has no quills to poke through and is expensive; down feathers, do not last as long, have quills that poke, flatten easier, but are less expensive; down and feather combinations have down to give it more loft, but still don’t last as long and still have quills that poke, and are somewhat less expensive than 100% down.

Down is harvested from ducks and geese. Please make sure that the company you buy any down products from harvests it humanely. Specifically, it is harvested during the natural molting season of the birds so they are not harmed in any way. The down falls out naturally and is collected and cleaned before use in any products.

Down Fill Power: The higher the number the better quality. 800 fill power is the best, most consistent and most expensive. The 800-fill down has the largest pieces of down, it retains its loft better and traps air easier, which gives it better insulating value.

Upper: the top of the bootie from the sole up

Insole: the inner padding that comforts and supports the foot

Sole: the bottom of the bootie, includes the tread if any

Take a Load off Your Feet: The Booties

They also can be worn at as slippers virtually anywhere. The biggest purpose is to keep your feet warm. So, take a load off while you read about our selected slippers.
