Features to Consider Before Buying

Some people will argue that hunting with archery equipment has a low probability of success. That is not the case since the current bows have been modified to match the occasion. Success when hunting with a bow is determined by its design features. To be able to buy the most resourceful and versatile archery equipment, you have to pay close attention to the following features:

Axle-to-Axle Length

This is the length between the bow’s cams attached to the bow’s limb tips. This measurement is very important when buying a bow, and it is chosen by the type of hunting you’ll perform.

Longer axle-to-axle length is better for treestand hunting, when you don’t have space constraints, like when you are hunting from the ground. In contrary, when hunting from the ground, look for shorter axle-to-axle length.

Draw Length

The length of your arms along with the width of your shoulders determines your draw length, which is the distance between your grip and the bow when holding the bow at full strength. You can measure it along the arrow from the nock to the point where the arrow crisscrosses the pressure point of the handle.

Draw length

You can determine your draw length with the assistance of the vendor or a colleague. Take a bow and nock an arrow onto it and hold at full draw. Then your assistant should mark the arrow directly above the pressure point of the arrow rest hole.

Obtain the measurement and add 1¾ inches to determine your draw length. Most bows allow for wide draw length range; just make sure you choose a model that will provide you with a convenient full draw within the design draw length range.

Draw Weight

Once you have established your draw length, go ahead and determine your draw weight. Draw weight is simply the amount of weight that it takes you to draw the bowstring back. In other words, it is the highest amount of weight that you will pull on your archery equipment. You should be able to draw in a controlled as well as smooth manner within a specific distance.

Target shooting

It is a bit tricky with the weight, because a direct shot on your target with higher interference is determined by the draw weight you can pull. This means that a higher draw weight will give you a better short compared to a lighter draw weight. New archers should start with a smaller weight, such as 5 to 30 as you gain poundage with developing shooting skill. Therefore, choose a piece with a convenient draw weight range, such as 5 lbs. to 70 lbs.

This factor works hand in hand with a number of design features/specifications. You can successfully hit your mark when you use a draw weight of 70 pounds, a brace height of 7½ inches and a single cam, which will collectively yield the appropriate speed. A suggested arrow specifications can be: 27-inch, 400 grains shaft weight, tipped with 100 grain broadhead that develops 10% front-of-center.

The above suggested specifications along with the correct draw length and weight should produce arrow speeds that range between 240 FPS to 250 FPS and create kinetic energy of not less than 6.92. To produce higher velocity, you must determine the appropriate balance between accuracy and speed with respect to your shooting abilities and design features/specifications.

Silence Is Gold

Your bow’s operation has to be ultra-quiet or else you will alarm your game. There are three common noises that your equipment will produce, which occur in three different stages of its operation. When pulling to full draw, the noises that will be produced are friction, creaks and squeaks along the arrow rest and the cable guard. You will experience additional noises when you release, such as vibrations and hand shock.

Bow hunter

To ensure that you do not lose your target because of some unwanted noise, you first have to shoot and inspect your bow for any kind of noise. Go for models that are installed with offset string suppressors and a generally minimal-noise design.

Wrap Up

Hunting with a bow is all about skills and experience. However, this does not mean that you cannot engage the activity if you are a newbie.

Your choice depends entirely on the type of hunting and your physical strength. Apart from the draw length, draw weight, velocity and ultra-quiet operation, you need to consider the net weight of the equipment, especially if you will be carrying it for longer distances before you reach your target.

The primary object is hitting the target when you release the arrow and not just shooting. This presents you with a challenge of knowing your workable draw length, draw weight and arrow speed.
